'I'm too small a person to even speak about it': Dinesh Karthik in awe of 'absolute champion' Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli continues to dazzle in the IPL 2025 season, smashing his fifth half-century as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) edged out Rajasthan Royals by 11 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. Kohli’s 42-ball 70 powered RCB to 205/5 – a total their bowlers successfully defended, securing the team’s sixth win of the season and lifting them to third in the points table.
Now playing his 18th season – all for RCB – the 36-year-old is second in the Orange Cap race with 392 runs at an average of 65.33 and a strike rate of 144.11. But beyond the numbers, it’s Kohli’s mindset that continues to inspire.

RCB mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik was effusive in his praise. “Virat Kohli, what do you tell about him? There’s a loss for words purely because of the hunger that he has,” Karthik said in a video shared by the franchise. “It’s one thing to play IPL for 18 years, but it’s a different thing to be consistent for 18 years.”
Who’s that IPL player?
Karthik revealed Kohli’s deep reflection after RCB’s early home games. “He told me, ‘Probably could have thought a little better,’ and he knows a lot of people turn up just to watch him bat.”

Poll

Is Virat Kohli still the best batsman in IPL history?

“The way he adapts, understands situations… I’m too small a person to even speak about it. He’s an absolute champion,” Karthik added.

With Kohli leading the way, RCB’s playoff push looks strong, while RR’s hopes have faded after their seventh loss in nine matches.

Meta lays off more employees in another round of job cuts, says ‘These changes are meant to…’

Meta has announced layoffs within its Reality Labs division, specifically impacting teams in Oculus Studios, the unit responsible for developing apps and games for Meta’s Quest VR headsets. Among the affected projects is Supernatural, a popular VR fitness app that Meta acquired in 2023.

Meta layoffs: Restructuring for efficiency

Meta stated that the layoffs are part of a broader effort to streamline operations and focus on future mixed reality experiences. While the exact number of employees affected remains undisclosed, the company emphasized that the changes aim to help Oculus Studios work more efficiently while continuing to deliver engaging content for users.
“These changes are meant to help Studios work more efficiently on future mixed reality experiences for our growing audience,” a Meta spokesperson told Reuters.

Meta layoffs: Impact on Supernatural

For Supernatural users, the layoffs mean a reduction in the number of new workout releases per week. However, Meta assured users that existing workouts will now be available at multiple skill levels, enhancing accessibility. The app’s coaches, who lead the workouts, will not be impacted by the restructuring.
This move comes as Meta faces mounting pressure to reduce costs in its Reality Labs division, which reported a $5 billion operating loss in the last quarter of 2024. The layoffs also precede Meta’s upcoming earnings report, where the company is expected to face scrutiny over its investments in the metaverse.

'We've been doing dirty work for US for 3 decades': Pakistan defence minister on support for terror groups

‘We’ve been doing dirty work for US for 3 decades’: Pakistan defence minister on support for terror groups

Pakistan’s defence minister made a striking admission regarding their involvement with terrorist groups, stating “We have been doing this dirty work for United States for 3 decades,” when questioned about Pakistan’s role.
During a widely circulated interview with Sky News presenter Yalda Hakim, she directly questioned him about Pakistan’s historical involvement in supporting terrorist organisations.
Khwaja Asif responded by acknowledging, “We have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about 3 decades… and the west, including Britain…That was a mistake, and we suffered for that, and that is why you are saying this to me. If we had not joined the war against the Soviet Union and later on the war after 9/11, Pakistan’s track record was unimpeachable.”
In the same interview, the defence minister issued a concerning statement about the possibility of full-scale conflict with India.
After the Pahalgam attack claiming 26 lives, the government implemented several diplomatic responses, including shutting down the Attari ICP, cancelling the SVES for Pakistani nationals with a 40-hour departure notice, and reducing diplomatic staff at both High Commissions.
The government also suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged severe consequences for both the attackers and conspirators. He emphasised that the time had arrived to eliminate remaining terrorist strongholds, stating that 140 crore Indians’ determination would defeat the perpetrators of terror.

Kremlin 'ready to reach a deal' with US on Ukraine: Russia's foreign minister Lavrov
Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is “ready” to negotiate with the US on Ukraine, though he added some elements need to be “fine-tuned.”
During an interview with CBS News, which was released on Thursday, Lavrov acknowledged President Trump’s mention of negotiations, stating, “mentions a deal and we are ready to reach a deal, but there are still some specific elements of this deal which need to be fine-tuned.”
He expressed optimism about progress, noting positive indicators of forward movement.
Addressing queries about recent attacks on Ukraine that resulted in 12 fatalities and numerous injuries in Kyiv, Lavrov defended the actions: “We only target military goals or civilian sites used by the military.”
He further justified the strikes, explaining that military commanders have authority to attack locations utilised by Ukrainian forces.
Still, on the talks with Ukraine, there are “several signs that we are moving in the right direction,” Lavrov said. Among them, he cited Trump as “probably the only leader on Earth who recognized the need to address the root causes of this situation.”
On Thursday, Trump posted an unusual criticism of Russian actions on social media: “I am not happy with the Russian strikes. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP!”
Following Thursday’s devastating Russian attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky abbreviated his South African diplomatic mission to return to the capital immediately.

Apple’s China exodus: All US iPhones to be made in India by 2025 https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/apples-china-exodus-all-us-iphones-to-be-made-in-india-by-2025/ https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/apples-china-exodus-all-us-iphones-to-be-made-in-india-by-2025/#respond Fri, 25 Apr 2025 05:11:03 +0000 https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/apples-china-exodus-all-us-iphones-to-be-made-in-india-by-2025/ Read more]]>

Apple’s China exodus: All US iPhones to be made in India by 2025
Apple will increasingly prioritize iPhones from the India supply chain for its US customers.

Apple is planning to shift the assembly of all iPhones sold in the United States to India by next year, a Financial Times report said on Friday- a bold move fueled by President Donald Trump’s renewed tariff threats on Chinese imports.
The plan is part of a broader strategy to diversify Apple’s supply chain away from China, which still dominates most of the tech giant’s manufacturing infrastructure. If successful, this shift would see over 60 million iPhones produced annually in India by 2026 – doubling current output, the FT report said.
Why it matters
The US is Apple’s most important market. In 2024, it accounted for roughly 28% of the company’s global iPhone shipments, according to IDC. Moving the production of US-bound iPhones out of China not only helps Apple dodge steep tariffs but also reduces long-term geopolitical risk tied to US-China relations.
More immediately, the pivot is a reaction to Trump’s “reciprocal tariff” agenda. His administration slapped China with tariffs that once hit as high as 145% and still include a 20% duty on smartphones. Though some electronics like phones were recently exempted, that relief appears temporary. Trump has also floated new levies aimed at semiconductor-heavy products, potentially impacting Apple’s entire device line.
Zoom in
In the fiscal year ending March 2025, Apple assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India – a 60% year-over-year increase, according to a Bloomberg report. About 20% of the world’s iPhones now come from India, a figure poised to grow rapidly.
Most of this production takes place at Foxconn’s sprawling campus in Tamil Nadu, along with Tata Electronics, which acquired Wistron’s operations and now also oversees Pegatron’s production. This marks a turning point for Apple’s manufacturing strategy, which had remained largely centered in China for nearly two decades.
India’s government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is helping pave the way. Apple is tapping into production-linked incentives and may benefit from new $2.7 billion subsidy plans aimed at boosting electronics manufacturing and semiconductors.
The big picture
Apple’s urgency stems from a trade shock in early 2024, when Trump’s tariffs knocked $700 billion off the company’s market value. In response, Apple began exporting Indian-assembled iPhones to the US – a move designed to beat the tariff clock, the FT report said.
Still, challenges remain. While assembly is the final stage in the iPhone production process, Apple is still heavily reliant on Chinese suppliers for components, the FT report added. Experts say shifting the entire supply chain could take years. Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that moving just 10% of Apple’s production out of China could take up to eight years.
The shift also counters Trump’s own call for companies to “bring jobs home.” Analysts say the US lacks the labor force and infrastructure to support large-scale iPhone assembly, making India a more viable alternative.
What they’re saying
“We believe this is going to be an important move for Apple to be able to maintain its growth and momentum,” Daniel Newman, CEO of the Futurum Group, told the Financial Times. “We are seeing in real time how a company with these resources is moving at relative light speed to address the tariff risk.”
Apple declined to comment for the FT report.
Between the lines
The iPhone maker’s pivot also aligns with broader supply chain reshuffling across the tech industry. The pandemic exposed the fragility of China-dependent manufacturing, especially during Covid-era lockdowns at Apple’s largest Chinese plant. Now, geopolitical risk is compounding that concern.
To get ahead of potential supply disruptions, Apple shipped 57.9 million iPhones in Q1 2025 — a 10% jump from the same period last year — as it raced to build inventory in the US before tariffs could take effect, IDC reported.
Consumers also noticed: Apple Stores saw a spike in demand this spring, as shoppers rushed to buy iPhones before potential price hikes kicked in.
What’s next
Apple is set to report earnings next week. Analysts expect the company to field tough questions about the financial impact of tariffs, India’s role in the company’s long-term strategy, and whether production goals for 2025 are realistic.
While Apple’s transition won’t fully sever its ties with China, the message is clear: The iPhone’s future – at least in the US – will increasingly be ‘Made in India’.

NOTA ‘failed idea’, never got a fraction of total votes, says EC | India News https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/nota-failed-idea-never-got-a-fraction-of-total-votes-says-ec-india-news/ https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/nota-failed-idea-never-got-a-fraction-of-total-votes-says-ec-india-news/#respond Fri, 25 Apr 2025 02:00:20 +0000 https://eeb.newsnational.co.in/nota-failed-idea-never-got-a-fraction-of-total-votes-says-ec-india-news/ Read more]]>

NOTA 'failed idea', never got a fraction of total votes, says EC

NEW DELHI: Election Commission and the Centre Thursday told Supreme Court that SC’s 2013 mandate to provide the option of NOTA to voters had turned out to be a “failed idea” and that it was preposterous for a PIL to insist on conducting polls even in the rare instance of there being only a single candidate in the fray to know whether she/he secures more votes than NOTA.
Appearing for EC, advocate Rakesh Dwivedi told SC, “NOTA… never impacted any election as a minuscule of voters exercised this option. Every winning candidate got far higher votes than NOTA.”
Attorney general R Venkataramani, with additional solicitor general S D Sanjay, said govt concurred with EC.
The bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said, “Can the Union govt and EC deliberate on prescribing a minimum vote percentage benchmark for winning candidates?”
‘Uncontested polls now rare’: EC urges SC to junk NGO plea
Govt may think of constituting an expert body comprising parliamentarians and domain experts to discuss this issue. Since our Constitution provides for a democracy by majority, is it not desirable that the winning candi-date secures a threshold vote percentage, which would be fixed by Parliament,” the bench said.
Venkataramani said this issue was deliberated upon at length by EC which gave a report on ‘one nation one poll’. The recommendations were debated by parliamentarians and there were divergent views, he said.
Justice Kant said this may be a hypothetical issue – a single candidate in the fray may secure less votes than Nota in case an election was held instead of declaring that candidate elected unopposed.
In its affidavit, EC said a candidate getting elected unopposed from a Lok Sabha constituency was very rare. Since 1991, there was only a single such instance of a candidate getting elected to Lok Sabha unopposed, Dwivedi said. “Since 1971 till today, that is in the last 54 years, there have been six uncontested elections in total. In the 20 general elections since 1951, there have been only nine uncontested elections,” he added.
Responding to the PIL by NGO ‘Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy’ seeking conduct of election even when there was only a single candidate in the fray, EC said, “With the evolution of democracy, a greater number of political parties are contesting elections and, hence, the number of candidates also increases automatically, and voters have become more aware and eager to exercise their right to vote.
“The chance of the election being uncontested has become a rarity which is proven from statistical data and, hence, in such a scenario, SC ought not to entertain the present petition.”
Nota option is there only when there is an election, EC said, adding, “Hence, treating Nota as a mandatorily contesting candidate in all direct uncontested elections does not find place in the statute and the same would require legislative amendments in the provisions of Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.”

BSF man strays 5 paces into Pakistan, detained by Rangers

AMRITSAR: Amid India’s diplomatic response to Tuesday’s attack in Pahalgam, Pakistan Rangers detained a BSF trooper Thursday after he “inadvertently took five paces into Pakistani territory” while purportedly keeping watch on farmers heading out to their fields along the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur.
The constable, in uniform and carrying a service rifle, was identified as PK Sahu of BSF’s 182nd Battalion. He is a native of Bengal’s Hooghly.
A BSF delegation reached Jalloke border outpost in Ferozepur after receiving confirmation of the detention and held a flag meet with Pakistan Rangers. “BSF remains in touch with Rangers to ensure the trooper’s safe return, although they are still to receive a response to the request to hold another flag meeting at Hussainiwala on Friday,” a source said.
Sahu was recently transferred to his unit in Ferozepur and possibly not “fully familiar” with the demographic restrictions there, an official said.
He mistakenly strayed into Pakistan territory while seeking shade of a tree to watch over farmers whose crop fields are along the zero-line. They till the land with nod from the BSF, which deploys “Kisan Guards” during the planting season.

NEW DELHI: Massive landslides have struck Munshithang on the Lachen–Chungthang road and Lema/Bob on the Lachung–Chungthang road on late Thursday, disrupting travel routes in North Sikkim.
The region has been witnessing continuous rainfall, raising concerns over road safety and accessibility.
While the route to Chungthang remains technically open, authorities have advised that it is unsafe for use at night due to ongoing heavy rain.
As a precautionary measure, no travel permits to North Sikkim will be issued for tomorrow. All previously issued permits stand cancelled, said Sonam Dechu Bhutia, Superintendent of Police, Mangan district.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation as rain continues to hamper relief and repair efforts. Travelers and tourists have been advised to avoid the area until further notice.

J&K all-party meet calls Pahalgam massacre ‘direct assault on Kashmiriyat and idea of India’, backs Modi govt’s measures

SRINAGAR: An all-party meeting convened Thursday by Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Pahalgam massacre adopted a resolution condemning the barbaric act and supporting the measures taken by Union govt to bring the perpetrators to justice. The resolution termed the brutal killings an “assault on Kashmiriyat and the idea of India”
While expressing shock and grief over the loss of 26 innocent lives in the terror attack, the resolution also hailed the “supreme sacrifice” of pony guide Syed Adil Hussain Shah, and lauded the Kashmiri people for their “extraordinary display of moral and material support to all the tourists” across the Valley.
The resolution called upon all sections of society across the country to maintain peace and not give in to provocations, while urging govts of other states and UTs to ensure Kashmiris residing or travelling there were “safeguarded against any form of harassment, discrimination, or intimidation”.
At the outset, a two-minute silence was observed by all the participants to pay tributes to the victims.
Reading out the resolution at a press conference after the all-party meeting, Omar said: “We unequivocally condemn in the strongest possible terms the heinous, inhumane attack in Pahalgam that targeted and killed innocent civilians. Such cowardly acts of brutality against peaceful citizens have no place in society and are a direct assault on the values of Kashmiriyat and the idea of India, which have long been a symbol of unity, peace and harmony in the region.”
“We stand unwavering in our commitment to support all efforts in bringing these perpetrators to justice. In doing so, we affirm that no act of terror can ever weaken our resolve or extinguish our indomitable spirit,” the resolution said.
Extending condolences to the families that have suffered loss, the resolution also saluted the “valour and selflessness” of the slain pony guide. “He is a true face of Kashmiriyat and Kashmir hospitality,” Omar said.
The Kashmiri people’s “resolute unity in condemning the recent attack” and the spontaneous, peaceful demonstrations across J&K exemplified their “unwavering commitment to peace, communal harmony and the rule of law”, and reaffirmed their “collective resolve to foster mutual respect, uphold constitutional values, and work collaboratively for the prosperity and stability of J&K”, the resolution further stated.
